About Us

Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), Swayem, is a premier government-funded residential institution established to provide quality education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students in remote and tribal areas. EMRS is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, launched in 1997–98 under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, with the objective of ensuring free, holistic, and high-quality education for tribal children across the country. These schools are currently managed by the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), which oversees their functioning and development nationwide.

In the state of Sikkim, EMRS Swayem holds the distinction of being the first such institution, sanctioned under the Namok-Swayem GPU in Mangan District and becoming fully operational in 2007. Over time, it has emerged as a center of excellence in residential education. The school is affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and offers academic instruction from Class VI to XII, with streams in Humanities and Science, and plans for the introduction of Commerce in the near future.

EMRS Swayem provides a comprehensive and enriching educational environment. The campus is equipped with modern facilities, including well-maintained classrooms, science and computer laboratories, sports infrastructure, and separate hostel accommodations for boys and girls with mess facilities. The institution is designed to accommodate a large number of students, ensuring that they receive not only academic instruction but also proper care, discipline, and personal development.

The school places strong emphasis on holistic growth, encouraging students to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities. Regular participation in sports, cultural, and literary events at both state and national levels has helped students showcase their talents and achieve remarkable success.

In addition to academics and extracurricular activities, EMRS Swayem also focuses on personality development and career readiness. Initiatives such as winter crash courses for board examinations and proposed coaching for competitive exams like JEE and NEET aim to prepare students for future challenges. The recent introduction of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) contingent further strengthens discipline, leadership, and patriotism among students.

Cultural preservation and promotion form a vital part of the school’s ethos. The institution actively celebrates tribal heritage through events such as folk dance competitions, cultural festivals, and observance of important occasions like Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.

Managed by the EMRS Society of Sikkim under the Social Welfare Department, the school benefits from strong administrative support and well-trained teaching and non-teaching staff appointed as per NESTS guidelines. Through its commitment to quality education, cultural pride, and all-round development, EMRS Swayem continues to empower tribal students and shape them into responsible, confident, and capable citizens of the nation.
